What is the best way to clean my wedding ring set?
I just got my wedding ring set professionally cleaned. They also re-dipped, tightened the diamonds, and resized it for me. It looks BRAND NEW! How do I keep it looking clean and new? (I have a jewelry cleaner, but I was wondering if there was a better, or more natural cleaner? Or is the jewelry cleaner the best way to go?) Thanks for your help!
I make jewelry for a living, and one thing that I used to have a problem with was keeping materials from tarnishing before I got a chance to use them. I ran across this tip and it works like a charm for the things you need to store but want to keep clean, including silverware: rub them with a very thin coating of Alberto VO5 Hair Dressing (the greasy hair stuff in the tubes – yes, they still make it!), then wipe your jewelry with a polishing cloth to remove any excess, and store each piece/kind in a Ziploc bag that has all of the air pushed out.
I’m assuming that you will be actually WEARING your wedding rings, though, and while this treatment will help them some, it will rub off rather quickly. I clean all of the precious metal jewelry that I wear regularly with either baking soda or mild toothpaste and warm water using a very soft toothbrush (the one I use is made for young toddlers). I just clean my rings at the same time I scrub my nails. I usually leave them on my hands to scrub them, but remove them once a week or so to make sure I keep lotion and stuff out of any places on the insides of the bands, too, and when I do, I check for loose stones, etc.! I use the little drain basket for my contact lenses in the sink to keep them from getting dropped down the drain!
By the way, a thin coating of VO5 applied to clean hands before working on the car or anything else really dirty or greasy also helps enormously to keep hands and nails from getting grease or grass stained and makes clean-up a breeze afterwards! I used to hate changing the oil or anything in the car cuz I always got grease under my nails and couldn’t get it out. Not any more! =)
