Is there an easy way to tell if a piece of Crystal gem is for real?

I see many shops selling Crystal Jewelry, like pendants, bracelets, earrings etc etc and they “claim” them to be ‘real’ Crystals and therefore jack up the price voraciously.

1. Is there a “idiot’s guide” way to tell if a piece of Crystal is for real or just a piece of manufatcured colored glass or tempered resin?

Thanks

There’s a hardness scale from 1 (talc) to 10 (diamond). If something that is supposed to be equal in hardness or less than your crystal can scratch it, it’s not the type of crystal that you’ve been told it is.

If buying amber, pull out a lighter and strike it. If the merchant screeches, “AIEEEEEE!!!!,” and snatches the specimen away from you, then the stuff was plastic. REAL amber — he won’t object. The flame won’t harm it.
