what is an eternity ring?

My other half surprised me one week ago with a diamond eternity ring. I have no idea what they are? what they mean? help….

They used to be called anniversary rings and were usually given to the wife by the hubby to mark a special anniversary, usually the tenth..10, 25, 50, 75 are considered milestones in a marriage….
…Now they are called eternity rings…the idea is to gift the wife with a ring that is symbolic of the husband’s eternal commitment, love, and devotion to his wife….
…they also refer to a particular style of ring…usually channel set stones that can be round,square, baguette…..usually around the entire ring.
