Why was the diamond chosen for the wedding ring? why not something else?

is there a reason why wedding rings have diamonds in them?? (besides being pretty) is there a certain meaning or reason behind it?
and is it a bad thing if i want a sapphire or ruby instead of a diamond in my wedding ring?? i don’t know if it would be a bad thing.. i don’t really like diamonds.. haha.
