How can we find out who made the ring my mother has?

My mother has a snake ring she got a while ago that was resized so we are unable to tell who the maker is. I have been looking online to no avail. She is unsure where she purchased it from and things it was in the early 1970′s. How can we figure out the maker of this ring? I know that it is probably 14 karat gold and it’s a spiral ring with a red stone in the mouth of the snake and diamonds for eyes. Is there any site or place we can go to or use that would help us find the maker? I am thinking there has to be other people out there with the same ring and some vintage store has to be selling it. If we don’t find the maker of the ring will that affect the rings worth?
