Diamonds come in a lot of different cuts. The Asscher cut was developed by a man name Joseph Asscher, who was commissioned to cut the world’s largest diamond by the Royal Family in 1902. Joseph and his brothers cut the 3,105 carat Cullinan Diamond that remains as part of the British crown jewels today. Between the 1920′s (when they cut peaked in popularity) and 2001, the Asscher cut was hard to find and was only available in antique shops or with art deco jewelry dealers. However, today this cut of diamond is still popular, yet rare.
In 2001, this diamond cut had a re-launch, after a lot of research and development brought it back to the public with new specifications and additional facets. The revitalization of the Asscher cut has made this one of the most highly demanded diamond shape.
The Asscher diamond cut has been exclusively patented, and therefore every genuine Asscher diamond will have the Asscher family insignia inscribed on it, along with an identification number (unique to each diamond). The inscriptions are only visible through a high magnification, so don’t be worried about the diamond being marred in any way with this insignia or identification number. Your jeweler can help you verify if you have an original or not (although the price tag might alert you too).
The square shape of this diamond is one of its signature qualities. The square shape had deeply trimmed corners making it look like an octagon. The cut is done with a series of parallel steps to create a “hall of mirrors” when one looks deeply into the diamond. You may have also heard this kind of cut called “the square emerald cut” or the “modified cushion cut.”
If you’re considering using an Asscher cut for an engagement ring, the most common setting is a four-prong arrangement. Because the diamond is step cut, it does not reflect light naturally – or at least not as much as some other diamond cuts. Having a four-prong arrangement helps set up your diamond in an elevated position so that it can attract more light and be able to shine more. If you choose the four-prong arrangement, make sure the prongs don’t hide any of the diamond’s distinctive corners.
Another popular setting is the pave setting. With the pave setting, the ring is coated with a crust of diamonds that help to complement the rarity and beauty of your Asscher cut diamond. A lot of engagement rings with the Asscher cut will also include accent stones that can lie against the flat sides of your center stone. These diamonds are usually in the trilliant, princess or emerald cuts. Asscher cuts, however, are so distinct and unusual that if you choose to let it stand alone, your Asscher cut diamond engagement ring can be a stunner on its own.
Even with the rejuvenation of the cut in 2001, the Asscher diamonds remain pretty exclusive. Celebrities have been a big part of making the cut more popular and easy to find. Just look for a high-quality jeweler and you’ll be sure to find a choice selection of Asscher cut diamonds.
