Has anyone ever heard of putting a white gold prong diamond setting on a platinum ring?
I am upgrading my platinum engagement ring. I am going to use my current diamond and have it put into a new setting. The new ring is also platinum. The jeweler suggested that the diamond be set in a white gold prong setting vs. a platinum prong setting because the diamond will be elevated a bit off of the rest of the ring. She felt the white gold would be more durable (to bangs and bumps that occurs in day to day wear.) Everything I have read on the net suggests the opposite…that platinum is more durable for a prong setting. Which prong setting is better, platinum or white gold?
I am actually doing the same thing and I have talked to many jewelers. I have a platinum ring and I want to put a new prong on it. I am going to go with platinum. Platinum is more durable and it’s a solid color. What can happen with the white gold is that it will lose it’s white color and you’ll have to get it “rhodiumized” again. Prongs made of white gold are more susceptible to breakage where as platinum prongs will just bend. I personally would want everything in platinum. Hope this helps.
