About diamond testing nature or nonsense ?
I have a therory, regarding natural rough uncut diamonds .I believe they can be tested by using the sun . If you hold a diamond up and look inside the center of the sun at the hotest part ,of a cloudless summer day without being blinded it is a diamond.Remember (uncut). Due to the fact its refractive index is so high compared to all other gems while uncut it absorbs the direct rays of the sun sheltering your sight.
For heaven’s sake DO NOT DO THIS – it is the fastest track to BLINDING YOURSELF that you can follow, it is playing Russian Roulette with a gun that has six bullets in the chamber and none empty. A high refractive index has NOTHING to do with absorbing light WHATSOEVER, it merely indicates the degree to which light is bent while passing through the medium. In addition to this diamond is cubic and therefor singly refractive so it does not even absorb part of the radiation like many other stones.
It is true that with properly proportioned cut diamonds no light passes through the stone when viewed from the front through to the back due to its being totally reflected internally – this can also be achieved with other stones but the required cutting proportions are too deep to be practical. In the case of an uncut diamond you do not even have the minimal protection of it having having facets to internally reflect the sun’s light so it will go straight through and do permanent damage to your retina.
Once again please, please, for your own sake do not try this out. Excuse all the Caps. but this is a VERY IMPORTANT SAFETY MATTER.
