It is very easy to get swept up in the wedding planning process. All of a sudden, the couple who wanted a simple wedding with forty of their closest friends finds themselves planning a gala for two hundred. Along the way, the bride ends up stressed out and frazzled as she frets over every tiny detail. Naturally, you want your wedding to be magical, but sometimes it is okay to let go of certain elements, especially if it helps to preserve your sanity.

The number one thing that I would suggest a couple eliminate from their wedding is programs. They seem to cause incredible stress for most couples, and frankly, they are unnecessary. The programs are one of those elements that cannot be completed until all of the details have been finalized shortly before the wedding date. Because of their last minute nature, programs frequently cause more anxiety than they are worth. Let’s be honest – after you have spent hours slaving to make your programs unique, elegant, and fabulous, your guests are going to glance at them briefly and then leave them on their seats after the ceremony. (Oh, you thought that your programs are so special that everyone will take them home as keepsakes and save them forever? Sorry, they won’t.) Spare yourself the expense and the hassle, and skip the programs. No one will miss them.

What about a videographer? A professional photographer is a must, but do you need your entire wedding documented on DVD as well? And will you actually watch those wedding clips more than once? This is really a matter of your personality. Some people feel that not a single moment of their wedding day should go unrecorded for posterity. Other couples may feel that the last thing they want is for someone to be there filming if they flub their vows. One other thing to consider is that sometimes the videographer can be very intrusive during the ceremony. If you are trying to hold down your wedding expenses, the videographer might be something that you can do without.

A hot trend in weddings right now is custom lighting schemes. You see brides who want their reception site to be bathed in colored light to match their wedding palette. It is a beautiful effect, to be sure, but it is really necessary for your wedding? If your flowers are purple, your bridesmaids wear purple, and you have purple beads in your crystal bridal jewelry, do you truly need purple lights as well? Instead of hiring a celebrity lighting specialist, you could do something more low-key but still beautiful. For instance, you could fill the room with tea lights in fancy votive holders – with purple beads to match your crystal bridal jewelry, of course. It is possible to create a unique and custom ambience without going over the top.

If you watch enough wedding shows, it it easy to believe that your wedding must include every bell and whistle or risk being dull and forgettable. However, unless you are an oil baron or an international celebrity, this is not true. Your friends will still gladly attend your wedding without being escorted to it in a stretch Hummer limo. They will also applaud your entrance to the reception even if you make it on foot instead of riding in on an elephant. Friends and family attend your wedding because they are happy for you, not for the spectacle.

Remember that the point of a wedding is to celebrate the joyous occasion of your marriage. Of course you want your big day to be memorable, but a simple tasteful wedding can be just as lovely as a more elaborate one. If the bride and groom can omit a few unnecessary steps from the wedding planning and enjoy the process more, it is a winning situation. Your wedding will be much more enjoyable if you do not drive yourself nuts planning it!
