Diamond is a popular gemstone for all kinds of jewelry. Its incomparable hardness, superb luster and brilliant fire make it the most highly priced of all gems. Diamond is made up of pure carbon, however, it often contains traces of impurities such as nitrogen. Diamond is formed deep beneath the earth’s surface, at very high pressures and temperatures. Its name is obtained from the Greek word “adamas” meaning untamable or unconquerable. The name reflects very well the gemstone’s outstanding ability to withstand scratches. Diamond is the hardest natural substance known on earth. It is also known to be a good conductor of heat. This quality makes it cool to the touch.

Diamond has a very high refractive index as well as high dispersion. These characteristics of the diamond, which are further enhanced by skillful cutting techniques, contribute to the superb brilliance and fire it is known to possess. A well-cut diamond optimizes this refracting ability to maximize its brilliance. Hence, a finely cut faceted diamond gem is extremely beautiful and highly valuable. Furthermore, through the development of better cutting and polishing methods, diamond is constantly improving its brilliance as well as popularity.

Diamond’s quality and value are determined by four factors, which are called the “four Cs”. They are color, clarity, cut and carat. Diamonds are found in a variety of colors due to the presence of impurities. The pure white or colorless diamond is the most valuable and highly priced. Colored diamonds are called fancy diamonds. Their colors include yellow, brown, green, blue, pink and red. Pure, colorless diamonds are rare as most diamonds show some trace of yellowish or brownish tint. The more yellow a diamond, the less it is worth. The clarity grade of a diamond indicates how clear the diamond is. It shows the extent of the presence of flaws in the diamond. The flaws are mainly very tiny imperfections which can only be seen through magnification. The flaws can be internal or external. The internal flaws are called inclusions while the external ones are called blemishes. The clarity grade is based on the number, size, visibility and location of these inclusions and blemishes of the stone. The cut of a diamond is important as it affects the sparkle of the diamond. There are several cutting styles the cutter can choose to use. The choice of cut depends on the particular diamond and how the cutter thinks that the brilliance of the stone can be maximized. If a gemstone is well-cut, the beauty and worth of the gemstone is increased. Cutting may affect the toughness of the stone. Some errors in cutting may increase the stone’s vulnerability to break. Carat is the unit of weight used to measure the weight of a diamond. Diamonds are sold by the carat. The larger the diamond, the more costly it is. Diamonds are graded by the four C’s and these grades determine the cost of the diamond.

Diamonds mainly come from South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Sierra Leone, Australia, Russia, USA, Brazil and Canada. It is reported that only about 20 per cent of mined diamonds are suitable to be used as gemstones. The rest are used for other industrial purposes. Diamonds are useful in other industries because of its quality in hardness. They are used in saws, dentist drills, surgical scalpels and as coatings for lenses. Due to its good heat conductivity, it is also used as heat sinks in electronic industries.

According to history, diamonds were used in suits of armor for great knights, and crowns of kings and queens. This gemstone was considered as a symbol of courage and invincibility. Besides, diamond was known to have magical powers. It was believed that the wearer of this gemstone would be endowed with superior strength, bravery and courage. In the past, diamonds were also regarded as talismans that could enhance the love of the husband for his wife. Nowadays, diamond is known to symbolize love, loyalty and courage. Most commonly, diamond is believed to represent eternity and love. Hence, many people usually choose this gemstone for wedding and engagement rings.

Gemstones are considered beautiful, rare and durable. The beauty of a gemstone is undiminished with time. A gemstone could sparkle as brightly many years from now. It has lasting value and is well liked by many. Hence, beautiful pieces of gemstone jewelry are created and widely used for personal adornment as well as gifts for friends and loved ones. Presenting these beautiful items as gifts is always well loved and cherished. Some people buy gems for the purpose of collecting them. They find these gems fascinating and enjoy having a collection of the pieces that they like.

Diamond is the birthstone for the month of April. As such, a piece of jewelry with this gemstone makes a perfect elegant birthday present for those who were born in that month. Diamond is also the anniversary stone for the 10th and 60th year. A piece of jewelry with this gemstone can also be a great anniversary present in these years. You will be amazed how this beautiful gemstone can be made into different jewelry items such as rings, bracelets, earrings, necklaces, brooches and pendants. With such a wide variety of items, you will never experience any shortage of gift ideas.

What are some good brands/designers of engagement rings that are not overly priced?

I am looking for a micro pave band or thin channel set band with nice detail or perhaps diamonds in the prong/setting that holds the main diamond. Nothing to ornate or over the top… any suggestions?

If you’re looking for a designer style without the extravagant price, I would suggest Tacori. Although they are still expensive, they still cost less than Harry Winston or Tiffany’s!

What should I be careful of when resizing wedding rings?

I have two rings I plan on resizing. A diamond channel wedding band and a solitare diamond engagement ring. The rings would go up 1.5 sizes. Both are platinum. What kind of things should I talk with the jewler about or be weary of after resizing them?
Well, I handed my ring over to the jewelers and now I have to wait, which is killing me. It should be done by Thursday. I just pray that it comes out just like how it was before but a few sizes up.

Ask if they plan on cutting/adding or stretching. To go up 1.5 sizes, stretching would more than likely weaken the bands and would FOR SURE loosen the stones in the channel set.

For the the solitare, you’ve really nothing to worry about as far as durability even if they cut/add to the band.
With channel sets, just discuss the possibilities/probabilities of how the resizing could effect the channel sets and whether or not it could result in looser settings.
For most well equipped jewelers, they will be very cautious when sizing a channel set band…but it pays to make your jeweler aware that YOU are aware this is possible if not done properly.

Do anyone know where I can get a nice diamond wedding band for my fiance in atlanta?

I want white gold 1/2 or 1 carat t.w. I want to find something around $600 if possible. Channel set prefer

Go to Macys last week of april, they are having a huge sale on rings, like 30% off sale plus 25% friends and family sale, and if you open a macys account, you get extra 25% off.
I went there to go buy our wedding bands and they told us to wait for the end of the month because we will be getting a better deal. They also have a clearance section with beautiful rings that are priced at 50% off, so add the extra discounts to that, you get great deal! good luck!

A wedding is for a lifetime and women’s wedding bands are no exception. It signifies two souls united in love for now and for future as well. Therefore, a lot of care and concern goes behind its purchase. However, it is not as tough as you would imagine, provided you are aware of what to buy before you set out to buy it.

The job of buying women’s wedding bands is easy once you know what you are looking for. The three main considerations before you buy include matching the style and design of the wedding ring of the groom; choosing the metal for the band where you have a choice of silver, yellow, white gold, platinum or titanium. The third point of consideration is to decide whether you want the ring to be stone studded or something simple like a wedding band.

Once you have made up your mind on the three points as given above, you are ready to do your market research for the woman’s wedding band. Plenty of jewelers sell wedding bands and the variety of style and design could be endless. The starting point of your research could be your local jeweler for some good designs. He may also offer the wedding band to you at a reasonable price.

Women’s wedding bands come in a variety of traditional as well as unusual styles. You could buy something that is diamond-studded or a classy solitaire. You could even choose some other colored stone, like opal, onyx, sapphire, etc. Some women prefer to buy a wedding band that matches with the engagement ring in terms of style and design.

You could also consider personalizing these wedding bands with names, dates or even an intimate message, for commemorating the event with your spouse for the rest of your life. All you have to do is to ask the jeweler to engrave your chosen text on the band.

As a precautionary step, it is always safe to insure women’s wedding bands since they are usually costly items, worn on a daily basis. To be completely sure of the quality of the metal and stone used and the weight of the ring, it is wise to take a Certificate of Authenticity from the jeweler who sells you the product.

Are you getting a plain wedding band, diamond one or enhancer?

My engagement ring is yellow gold with brilliant cut solitaire.

I’m getting a plain yellow gold wedding band to go with it.

What about you?

I’ve heard that “enhancers” are really popular instead of wedding bands. They go above and below the engagement ring.

Interesting!

If you have enhancers – is this instead of a wedding band?

But if you already have enhancers, then you can’t get an eternity ring?

Confusing!

Enhancers are popular but I don’t like them… they take up so much space on your finger, especially if you have small fingers. They seem too catchy and flashy and tacky (at least the ones I’ve seen). I want to get a band with channel set diamonds but not eternity (all the way around). I only want it about halfway around because no one will ever be looking the back of the ring, including me.

Getting your wedding band and engagement ring banded together?

I’ve been having the most difficult time with my rings sliding around my finger. My wedding band is a 1/2 eternity band (diamonds only on the front, metal around the back) and when it slides, it doesn’t look nice because the metal band is scratched and dull (lots of wear and tear!). My engagement ring has three diamonds on either side of the main diamond in the middle…so when they are both aligned, it looks nice. Problem is, they hardly ever stay aligned to look that nice!! :)

So, has anyone gotten their rings banded (soldered?) together? Yay or nay??

Your ring sounds identical to mine…LOL! I have wondered about getting mine soldered as well. The jeweler where my hubby got my rings told me that it will not stop the sliding around. I didn’t understand so he just put a little metal band on them to strap them together temporarily so I could see what he was talking about. Now instead of just my band sliding they both slid to the side and I was finding myself still adjusting them. He said this was because they are top heavy and that it may help if I get them soldered and sized a little smaller so they fit very snugly. I can’t stand my rings to fit snugly so I haven’t gotten mine soldered yet. If you want to know what it is like wrap a small wire or yarn around them to see if it makes it better for you if they are soldered. Also if you have a warranty on your rings you may be able to get the metal refinished. My hubby purchased mine with a lifetime guarantee/warranty on the diamonds and the metal so I have get mine refinished every 2 years and they look brand new again. Something to check into. Hope this helps some. Best wishes!

Getting a channel set diamond ring sized?

My husband finally got me my ideal ‘set’ today (He’s in the Navy, we did a quick wedding on a weekend last month and now he’s home on leave).

Anyways, so I always have liked very simple jewelry. I told him nothing ‘blingy’. My engagement ring is a .75c diamond solitaire. I’d of been happy with a regular band, but he picked out a .25c channel set diamond ring. But he got a size 7, as it was the only one they had and it was a good price. But I wear a size 11 ring. Now the channel set part is only the top 1/3rd, the diamonds do not go all the way around.. Will this be a problem? Can a jeweler do this without screwing it up?

I’m worried because it can’t be returned and I’ve really fallen in love with it. I just want to wear it.

Yes, take it to a jeweler who should be able to size it for you. Actually, you’d have a bigger problem if it were an eternity style ring, where the diamonds are set all the way around the ring…those can’t be sized at all.

Actually, you should check with the store/jeweler where he got it. The jeweler I do business with will initially size a ring free of charge.
