Can anyone please provide suggestions for buying a diamond? Any jewelers or gemologists out there?

Hello,
I am looking to get engaged very soon, and I see on the internet that there are so many facets to buying a diamond. Color, Clarity, Cut, percentages, etc. I am looking at a princess cut and a white gold setting, but am not sure what is a good diamond and what is not. The loose diamond I looked a yesterday was 90pt, measures 5.19-5.17, 74.9% 78%, SI2, H, Pavillion 61%, and it was $2850.00. Is this a good deal? What type of questions should I be asking when I walk into a jewelers? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Let me just say one thing about it… there are no bargains in buying a diamond. Like buying a mattress, you really do get what you pay for. If a diamond has good clarity and color, with few faults, it will be expensive. If you find a “cheap” diamond, it has flaws. No two ways about it. So you need to decide what you can spend, and what kind of diamond you want for it.

I spent just under $5000 on a nice marquis cut diamond that was 1/2 a carat and had very few faults. Your diamond likely has a number of faults, since it is nearly a carat and is only 2850. But maybe it looks just fine. It’s really up to you.
