How to wrap a crystal without wire?

I have been wanting to wrap a crystal without wire to make a necklace. I know that sinew can be used, but i have none, and am unsure how to get ahold of any, and to be honest, not really sure what to do if i got some. Does anyone know a substance other than wire or sinew that could be used to effectively wrap a crystal that wont come apart (so like no string) or how to wrap a crystal using sinew, and wherei could find some, or a webste with all of that ainformation? The reason sinew works is that when wetted it stretches and when it dries it shrinks and gets fairly hard. To use it you soak it in water. It will feel sort of rubbery and a bit slimy and be hard to handle. Pull on it as you are wrapping and tying it. Straight leather including leather shoe laces will do the same thing.
